The system installed in your home monitors 24 hours a day for fire, medical emergencies and carbon monoxide. In the event of an emergency the system will connect to the monitoring center by either phone, cellular or internet, and transmit the alarm condition to a computer at the monitoring center.  The computer at the monitoring center will then inform one of their many operators of the emergency and the operator will take the appropriate action. 
 
 As you can see, there is not much operational difference between alarm companies, they just use different brand name equipment and monitoring stations and there is not a lot of difference in the alarm monitoring stations.  So why do some companies charge as much as $45 per month or more for the same service?  Because they can. 

Our pricing is very affordable. We charge $17.95/month.  That is for residential or commercial.  If we are locked out of your system by your previous company, then we will charge you only our cost for replacing the parts needed to be able to reprogram your system.  If you don't have an alarm, we offer a basic system installation for $199.
 
Other companies will tell you that you are getting a so called "free" system and then charge an installation fee.  Then they charge you 2 or 3 times as much and make you sign a contract for 3 years. That is over $1600. That doesn't sound free to me. As a matter of fact, that sounds really expensive.
